Today is release day for the second book in the Midlife Meet Cute Series, Fixing Up My Love Life. This is a cute second chance romance. Hazel is a 42 year old single mom to 4 girls. Her oldest daughter signs her up for a dating app. She matches with Jack, who happened to be the boy who left her 20 years ago when he felt the need to leave town to achieve his dreams.
Hazel's youngest and Jack's teenage daughter steal the show for me. Jack's daughter Caroline telling him that he is "trying to look confident while slow roasting his dignity" had me literally laughing out loud and reminds me of something my own teenager would tell me.
Hazel is reluctant to trust that Jack will stay. While there is some commotion when a crab that Hazel's youngest caught tries to escape, Jack says something that makes me think of his leaving in a different light, "Maybe Snappy's not trying to escape. Maybe he's trying to see if someone will stop him." That line offered me a different perspective in the mind of a younger Jack. Was he someone who felt the need to leave, but would have stayed if someone had stopped him?
We'll never know the answer to if he would have stayed, but Jack knows he will need a grand gesture to prove to Hazel that he is in Twin Waves to stay and that he is all in for living this crazy life with her and their 5 daughters. I hope to see this family pop up in other books.
