Train Chronicles - Nashville

Oh, Nashville. The very small amount of time that we're here isn't enough, but we made the best of it. When we got in to Nashville on Thursday night, all we wanted was a good burger. No frills, nothing fancy, just a good burger. So I went to Reddit and we ended up at Hugh Baby's.

Reddit told me that I had to get the burger, fries and a shake. This place had some old school diner vibes and the food was exactly what you would expect from one.

I got the single cheeseburger because Reddit said the comeback sauce was amazing, and they were not wrong. The fries were crispy greasy perfection. The shake was thick, and even though I got the small shake, I still couldn't finish it after inhaling the fries like I hand't eaten in a month.

The next day was our day of exploring Nashville, and I couldn't think of a better way to start than with breakfast at The PFunky Griddle.

This was one of my favorite breakfast spots when I lived in Nashville. The concept is super simple, most of the menu you make yourself on a griddle in the middle of the table. I opted for The Joey, which is basically a pick from here, here, here and here meal.

I did the all you can eat 5 grain pancakes, with M&Ms and Butterfingers for my toppings, then biscuits, a half order of hash browns and bacon. It was plenty of food, and kept me full until we had an early dinner before our Grand Ole Opry show.

After breakfast, we went to the Country Music Hall of Fame. I think kiddo was a little overwhelmed at just how much stuff there was to see. We started with the new Dolly Parton exhibit and then worked out way through the rest of the space. I love seeing all of the albums on the walls. Kiddo got excited when she finally saw items from artists that she had heard of, and I learned that she really likes Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood is her queen. Who knew, not me.

After that, I drug kiddo along on an adventure. We did a quick spot by the Nashville Predators team store, before heading off to find one of the mini art print vending machines I've been seeing on Instagram. I'll admit, I started seeing this because of a reel when I was looking up things in Boston. However, this company has them throughout the US, and there happens to be a spot in Nashville! (2 recently were added to places in New Orleans, so I'll need to check them out.)

We stopped to grab coffee at Sometimes Coffee before heading to the Gift Horse and it was a super cute place. If we weren't on a time crunch, then we definitely would have hung around and chilled for a bit.

We walked to The Gift Horse, and y'all this store is my heaven. It's a stationary store so I had to reign it in and opted to just buy a surprise bag instead of the whole store.

However, we here on important business! Mini-art prints! I was more excited than kiddo, but we both were happy with the ones we got, even if I wished she had gotten the Sponge Bob ice cream bar.

After that little adventure, we headed back to the hotel to pick up the folks and make our way towards The Grand Ole Opry. It's the 100th anniversary of the Opry, so they had a ton of stuff commemorating that and I'm glad that I didn't bring my wallet because I've already spent way too much on this trip and will definitely be spending more.

I can honestly say that I had not heard of many of the people performing the night we went, but after seeing them live, I am a fan! Kiddo's favorite three were Sister Sadie, Priscilla Block and Mike James. My three favorites were Don Schlitz, Mike James and Priscilla Block. Don Schlitz closed the night out and he was so funny. He's the songwriter behind many super famous songs and he said how when he became a member, they told him that he had to say he wrote these songs so people didn't think they had wandered into a bad karaoke bar. He also started his set with, just a songwriter. no album coming out. no tour to promote.😂

The three songs he picked were "The Greatest" (performed by Kenny Rogers), "When You Say Nothing At All" (performed by Keith Whitley) and "The Gambler" (performed by Kenny Rogers). I did not realize that kiddo had never heard "The Gambler" and have decided to do better as a parent on her country music education.

That's a wrap from Nashville, see you next time for adventures from Pigeon Forge!
