Weekly Recap

I'm back to trying to do weekly recaps and all this has made me realize is that I need to start jotting notes during the week so I can remember what actually happened. I'm exhausted though, so it must have been a doozie of a week!

About the Book I'm Writing ...

So, I'm still working on the book. It's been two months, and I have been stuck on trying to figure out where to go from here and the characters have been very quiet. We're about to do some serious digging into their thoughts because I know kind of where we need to go but am having trouble figuring out what that looks like. I haven't given up, I've just had to step back and refocus.

About the food and the fun ...

I've actually had a lot of cool eats lately, which most kind of tie into chasing the fun.

Wednesday was shaping up to be an amazing day at work. One of the departments up the hill from us was having therapy puppies and the campus dairy store was going to have baby ducks. I let my boss know that my plan was to take an extended lunch break from 11-1 to play with all of the animals.

However, it was storming that day. I decided that I was only going to walk to one of them in the rain, and I opted for the puppies. My boss came with me because one of his dogs is actually part of this therapy dog group. His dog was sick and couldn't make it, but I had the best time hanging out with some of the best boys and girls. I would have tried to sneak one home with me if I was allergic.

It was also Harry Styles week at Caroline's Cookies. One of my coworkers and I wanted to go in together on a box of them to try. What she didn't know was that I planned to buy a box for her to go with the baby gift I got her, which was a board book about Harry Styles. The cookies were all given names based on Harry songs and I was glad that I decided to get us each a box because they were all so good.

I invited a few friends to try a new to all of us restaurant, Vera Cruz. I decided to go on Thursday because they have a tapas special - 3 tapas of your choice plus a margarita or glass of sangria for $25. You pick one tapas from three categories: land, sea, and classic.

I went with the jalapeno popper for my classic, which is a jalapeno stuffed with cheddar and cream cheese wrapped in bacon with a salsa macha. It was ok, but I probably would pick something else from the classic next time.

For my land, I went with the duck empanada which was so good! It was topped with a taramind glaze which was amazing. I highly recommend this one!

For my sea option, I got the shrimp gratinado, which was shrimp with a sauce made of garlic poblano butter and cilantro and there was a parmesan crust. I also recommend this one.

It was a great night trying new things with people from different friend groups and I can't wait to go back and try more things ... preferably from the happy hour food menu or another night of discounted specials.

Saturday took us to Lafayette because kiddo had a quiz bowl competition. We had to be there for 8 AM to drop her off and then it was up to us to kill some time before picking her up around 3:30 PM.
Let me tell you that there is not a whole lot of stuff open on Lafayette on a Saturday before 10 AM.

We went to Mel's Diner for breakfast and it looked like we beat the rush because we got the last table before people started having to wait for one. They advertise that they have the world's best biscuits, so I obviously had to test that claim. I'm not sure if I would say they are the best, but they were REALLY good. I got an omelette and hash browns.

After breakfast, we tried to find something that was open. We finally gave up and drove to the Visitor's Center, more so dad could get the lay of the land. Apparently a lot has changed since he went to college many, many moons ago ... who would have thought! 😂 While we were there, I made friends with the cat that hangs around outside.

We figured we would go to Vermillionville, which is basically a museum of what life was like back in the old days. It would kill tons of time and I haven't been since elementary school. They asked if we wanted to take the boat ride and after some thought, we went for it. I highly recommend it, however, if you do the boat ride, then you need to commit to spend pretty much the whole day there. The boat ride went from about 10:30 - noon but it is definitely worth it! We learned a lot about the history of the river and also got to see lots of alligators.

We sat down to eat at the restaurant on site and after we ordered, kiddo sent a text saying we would need to pick her up closer to 2pm. So, we asked for some to-go boxes to come out with our food because our order got in behind some large parties and was taking longer than expected to come out. However, everything we got was good. I got a side of catfish, which was about 4-5 pieces of fish, a side of fries and a cup of jambalaya. We're already planning when we could go back and see the actual museum, and bring kiddo because I think she would enjoy it.

About the books ...

I haven't done as good a job of keeping track of the books I've read each week. And I've DNFed a few lately, but here are some books I've read recently that I would recommend.

Ok, I'm back to trying to do better with my online diary. I have more stories from New York to catch up on, and I've got to try and get some order in my life and get kiddo cranking on her thank yous and then begin planning the London adventure. That's exhausting and I haven't scratched the surface on the normal activities on our calendars. 😫

Have a great week everyone!
