What I Ate: Southern Pearl Oyster House

During Covid, Yelp started offering virtual classes where people could learn from different businesses. I started taking some of those classes, and realized that this was something that Yelp offered in real life as well. At first I thought it was only for Elites, and since I wasn't one, that I wouldn't be able to attend any of them. But I quickly realized that while some events are for Elites only, they had many open to anyone with an account.

So I started going to all the events I could as a way to meet people and try some new places. Eventually, someone nominated me for Elite status, and the Elite Council deemed me worthy! So now, I have a cool Elite badge on my profile and I get to go to cool Elite only events. like the one we had at Southern Pearl Oyster House.

One of the cool things about this Yelp event, was that it was a sampling menu of some of their more popular items. Southern Pearl spared no expense, and even let our first round of drinks be on the house.

We'll start with these lovely appetizers. Now, only one person at our table of four eats oysters, so he enjoyed eating our servings too.

We started with an oyster sampler, which had one of each of their different styles of oysters: Charbroiled (white wine, butter, garlic and herb sauce), Orleans (smoky Cajun sauce), Bienville (topped with mushroom, crab, shrimp, bacon, breadcrumbs), and Rockefeller (topped with spinach, cream cheese and herbs)

The oysters were followed by the crawfish, crab and corn bisque and the half shell salad. I would go back just for these two things. The bisque was full of flavor and full crawfish and crab. While the salad was just a salad, it was fresh and they make their own balsamic dressing in house.

After playing a game of Baton Rouge and oyster trivia, it was time for our entrees. The almond encrusted chicken was so good! Their marketing director told us that she actually doesn't like seafood, and that this dish is her go-to order.

The seafood stuffed Portobello was amazing. The lemon aioli is something I could buy by the bottle and it complimented the seafood stuffing very well.

The surprise of the night was how much I LOVED the filet Orleans. I have to tell you that I am not really a big steak person, but the flavor that this steak had made me wish I had a full portion.

We ended the night with their cinnamon roll bread pudding, which is their homemade cinnamon rolls with pecans and cranberries, topped with a spiced rum sauce. I will say that the cranberries gave it a unique flavor, and since I love all things cranberry, I enjoyed this a lot, even though I'm not a big fan of cinnamon rolls.

So cheers to Southern Pearl Oyster House and Yelp Baton Rouge for such an awesome event! I can't wait to hang out and see everyone again in February for some king cake making.
