Another day, another boat. For someone who gets motion sickness, Amelia wanted to be on a boat every day. She is the water person in this friendship, where I am the mountain person. We both enjoy just being in nature (her more than me, she is outdoorsy where as I am outside-y) but I prefer to look at the water more than be on it.
When we got to the harbor and saw it was a yellow for how choppy the ride would be, both of us got a little nervous. While the scenery from the boat was beautiful, it was quite a bumpy ride from Boston to Salem.
We arrived in Salem in one piece, with our stomachs a little not happy with our travels, and nary a plan. There was a trolley that was waiting at the docks to pick people up and bring them into downtown Salem.
When we arrived, Salem was touristy ... I expected it to be more over the top touristy, while Amelia didn't expect it to be as touristy as it was. We debated going on the trolley tour, but since it wasn't a hop on/hop off tour, we couldn't justify the cost in our heads. Especially since we weren't the typical Salem tourists there to see all of the witch things.
We wanted to go find the Salem Literary Festival (because nerds) but saw that events wouldn't start until we needed to head back to Boston. So we decided to just wander around. This lead to us stopping in various gift shops to poke around.
Our curiosity brought us into a chocolate shop. However, this chocolate shop offered drinking chocolate flights. I've had drinking chocolate before, Amelia had not, so we decided to try it. I got a cookie to dunk in the chocolates because I've learned that drinking chocolate is NOT hot chocolate, and for the ones that aren't as American-ized, I like to use them more as a dip.
Unlike the other people that we saw in the shop, we did not finish our full flight. We enjoyed the experience and sampling them, but we wanted some real food. I do not regret starting with dessert, and I highly recommend sampling a drinking chocolate flight if you get the chance! Just get some whipped cream or maybe a cookie/brownie to dip them in since most of them are more bitter to the taste than you would think.
After some more browsing in shops, it was time to head off to lunch. We wanted to go somewhere that served a hot lobster roll, and we ended up at a place called Fitz, which was also near the water. We ate on the patio, and got a hot lobster roll to split, some sushi and of course some fries.
Before we moved on to our big plans for the night, we stopped by the memorial for the Salem Witch Trials before catching the commuter rail back to Boston.
We made a quick pass through the Bruins team store before we made it to the main event to close out the trip.
We ended up at the 100th Annual Italian Feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian! Neither of us are Catholic. I was pushing attendance due to the Italian food promised. She was on the fence until she overheard one of the tik toks on my for you page that I was scrolling in bed where they said that the Pop 2000 crew was going to be in attendance. (Chris K of NSYNC, OTwn, LFO and Ryan Cabrera) FOR FREE!
Chris was Amelia's favorite NSYNC member, so she was all about this festival once we knew he was going to be there.
We were both surprised yet not surprised that this is literally just a local street festival. We knew nothing about the Saints so we looked up that they were twins and are the patron saints of physicians, surgeons and pharmacists.
We got there for 6:30 when the "gates" officially opened. It didn't take long to walk through the booths. I grabbed a chicken parm calzone, and it was good but would have been much better if it was fresh. The first performer was an up and coming country artist. She was good, and knew that at a festival to get the crowd into your set if they don't know you, you need to play songs they know.
The guys didn't go on until 8:30. After 2 hours, we saw they were not close to finishing and we knew we had a 6 am airport shuttle to catch and we still had to pack, so we bailed early. 😔 However, what we saw was amazing! OTwn can still move pretty well, and I laughed that the dance moves seemed very Zumba/Tae Bo like, which fit the whole 2000s vibe.
It was the best way to end what was a going on vibes bestie trip and I can't wait to see where our next adventures take us!
